In certain traditions, August 1st marks the beginning of the harvest season. It's the time when the hard work of the growing season begins to pay off as you're able to finally taste the first fruits of your labor.
And it has me thinking.
Well, about a lot of things, because as usual my brain’s a crowded place.
But mostly it has me thinking about the 1971 song “Sunshine” by Johnathan Edwards.
Rather appropriate, I think, considering it’s an election year and many of our incumbent politicians are facing the impact of the choices they have been making.
“He can’t even run his own life, I’ll be damned if he’ll run mine.” is a pretty strong statement to direct at anyone, but when it’s directed at yet another would-be ruler who has ended up exposed in the public square it’s particularly scathing.
It’s getting harder and harder to keep secrets in our modern world and as we get more access to information it gets harder for those in charge to duck questions from their constituents.
It takes a particularly strong flavor of stupidity or insanity, or both, to keep lying when lies are exposed as soon as they come out of your mouth.
And yet here we are.
The pressures of modern life keep building and some people just keep trying to pretend they can’t hear or see the struggles that are tearing people apart.
However, propaganda doesn’t lower grocery prices and recycling the same old bigotry and false fear no longer drowns out the cries for justice that ring through America’s streets.
Just where are those tax dollars going, Senator?
You say you’re talking to people, but are you listening while you’re at it or is the volume in your echo chamber up too loud for you to hear how out of touch you are with the people you’re supposed to represent?
We’ve gone from denial to delusion and I expect we will hit demented and deranged any day now, if we haven’t already. (If we have, don’t tell me.)
But deep underground the rumbling has started. The day of reckoning is coming and all the ballot scrambling shenanigans in the history of the world cannot hold it back.
The people asked for equity and accountability, instead they were given charades and parlor tricks.
And now the consequences have come full circle.
It’s going to be a very interesting harvest season.
